NATION IN BRIEF : SOUTH CAROLINA : Sen. Thurmond, 87, Will Seek Reelection

Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.), a living legend in South Carolina and the oldest member of Congress at 87, announced he will be a candidate for a seventh six-year term. “In all my years of public service, I have never felt a stronger obligation to continue my work for the future of our state and our nation,” Thurmond said. He spoke about the issues of education, environment and health care for the elderly in making his reelection bid official. A heavy favorite, Thurmond would be 94 at the end of another term, making him the oldest member of Congress ever.
