ON THE SIDELINES : 12 Nations in Volleyball Playoffs
Twelve countries will compete in the International Volleyball Federation’s World Challenge ’90 in Japan in April, with the top three nations advancing to the world championships, the federation president said today.
Round-robin competition among two groups of six nations each will begin April 13, with the top three teams from each group advancing to the finals here on April 22.
In Group A, Japan will play Iraq, East Germany will meet Puerto Rico and Poland is to face the Netherlands in Tokyo. Group B will match Spain against Algeria, Yugoslavia against Taiwan and China against Sweden in Gifo in central Japan.
The United States, the Soviet Union, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cuba, France, Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Cameroon, Venezuela, Canada and South Korea qualified for the world championships in Brazil in October.
