Cal State Northridge faculty members Thursday approved a statement responding to last summer’s violence, which condemned the People’s Republic of China for beating and killing students, but reiterated CSUN’s commitment to educational exchange programs with the country.

The statement must be approved by CSUN President James W. Cleary before becoming the university’s official position.

China condemnation--An article in Friday’s paper implied that Prof. Lawrence Littwin of Cal State Northridge had approved a weakened version of a faculty statement concerning last summer’s violence in China. In fact, Littwin amended the statement to include a stronger condemnation of the actions.

Political science professor Lawrence Littwin--who wrote the original statement--voted for the weaker, revised version, after saying earlier this week that he would not compromise.

However, a small group of faculty members continued to oppose the compromise as being too strong. They said they feared it would jeopardize CSUN’s long-standing exchange relationship with 17 Chinese institutions.

“The likelihood of this is that we might lose our programs in the future,” said Nirmal Mishra, professor of electrical and computer engineering.
