In its final tuneup before journeying north to Santa Maria for the eight-team Central Coast tournament, the Moorpark College baseball team put its whole game together Thursday against Mission.

The Raiders, behind the pitching of Steve Biggs and Rob Teasdale and a 15-hit attack, defeated the Free Spirit, 8-2, in a nonconference game at Valley College.

Moorpark improved to 4-2. Mission is 4-3.

The victory was Moorpark’s second win against the Free Spirit in six days. On Saturday, Moorpark’s Jeff Berman threw a shutout in the Raiders’ 1-0 win.

Moorpark outfielder Darren Aurand had three hits Thursday and drove in three runs. Marcus Lockwood, a sophomore catcher who did not enter the game until the fifth inning, had a solo home run in the seventh and a double in the ninth that drove in the Raiders’ final two runs.

“We’ve been struggling a little to get the good pitching and hitting at the same time,” said Lockwood, whose homer started a three-run rally. “This is a good way for us to start the tournament, then come back for conference.”

Biggs did not allow a run or a hit in 4 1/3 innings, but he did walk four and hit two batters. Teasdale did not allow a hit until the seventh inning when Bruce Gomez singled to left.

The game’s key play occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning with no outs and Moorpark leading, 3-0.

Biggs loaded the bases by issuing consecutive walks to Gomez and Mike Rogers and then hitting Brad McGahan with a pitch.

Teasdale relieved Biggs and induced Rich Ortiz to hit a ground ball to second. Gomez crossed the plate as Moorpark second baseman Mike Suarez fielded the ball and flipped it to shortstop Dan Smith. When Smith’s relay bounced past first baseman Hank Shelb, Rogers crossed the plate. The umpires, however, ruled that McGahan interfered with Smith’s throw. McGahan and Ortiz were called out and Gomez and Rogers were sent back to third and second, respectively.

Teasdale got Dave Turner to fly out to left to end Mission’s threat.
