ON THE SIDELINES : Mets Sign Outfielder, 2 Pitchers

NEW YORK — The Mets signed outfielder Mark Carreon and minor league pitchers Bill Laskey, Terry Bross and Julio Valera to one-year contracts today.
Carreon batted .308 with six home runs and 16 RBIs in 68 games with the Mets last season. Valera was 15-9 with New York’s minor league teams at Port St. Lucie of the Florida State League, Jackson of the Texas League and Tidewater of the International League.
Laskey, a free agent, is a six-year major league veteran who was 4-4 with a 3.38 ERA at Omaha of the American Assn. last season. He last pitched in the majors in 1988 with Cleveland.
Bross, a former basketball player at St. John’s, was 8-2 with 11 saves and a 2.79 ERA at Port St. Lucie last season.
