ON THE SIDELINES : 49ers Tempt Saints’ Waymer
Dave Waymer, a veteran defensive back for the New Orleans Saints who was left unprotected under the NFL’s Plan B free agent system, will sign with San Francisco unless the Saints want to match the 49ers’ offer, he said today.
“I told the Saints I wouldn’t sign anything until I talked with them. They can’t negotiate with me, but I’m going to see them today and if they want to match it, I’m staying,” Waymer said.
Agent Greg Campbell, contacted Thursday night in Beverly Hills by the Times-Picayune, said Waymer agreed to a three-year, $2-million contract with the 49ers.
Waymer, 31, earned a base salary of $200,000 in 1989 with the Saints. He was the team’s leader in interceptions with 37 during his career.
Waymer is scheduled to sign a contract Monday in San Francisco if the Saints do not match the offer.
