NHL ROUNDUP : Rangers Get a Gift--and 4-3 Victory

Share

The New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers apparently scored goals in overtime Monday at New York, but only the Rangers’ goal counted, so they won, 4-3.

The winning goal was scored by Brian Mullen with only 13 seconds left.

Earlier, about halfway through the overtime, the Devils’ John MacLean fired a shot that hit the post, went under the crossbar and dropped down.

The red light did not go on, and referee Dan Marouelli ruled the puck did not go into the net even though slow-motion television replays clearly showed the puck went into the net. But because there is no instant-replay rule in the NHL, the ruling stood.

There was no doubt about Mullen’s goal, his 18th. It moved the Rangers (26-25-10) into a tie with the New York Islanders for first place in the Patrick Division.

Detroit 5, Montreal 5--Russ Courtnall’s hat trick included a goal on a penalty shot that enabled the Canadiens to get the tie at Detroit.

The Red Wings led, 5-2, with a little more than five minutes left in regulation. But the Canadiens tied it in just 57 seconds.

Brent Gilchrist started the comeback at 14:34 and Courtnall scored the next two, the penalty shot at 15:31.

The penalty shot was awarded because the Wings’ Steve Chiasson covered the puck in the goal crease.
