British luxury car maker Jaguar’s U.S. unit today announced a recall of 38,315 Jaguar sedans to repair hydraulic problems in 1988 and 1989 models that could cause fires or loss of the cars’ power brakes.

Jaguar Cars Inc. said the models affected include the XJ6, Vanden Plas and Majestic.

In these cars, the high pressure hose that supplies fluid for the power assist system can rupture, causing loss of fluid. Also, hydraulic fluid can leak from the brake system.

Fluid from hose failure could cause smoke under the hood and engine fire, and brake switch leaks could occur near electrical wiring, causing electrical power loss and failure of the power brake system. But unassisted braking would still be available to the driver.

Jaguar also said it is contacting 31,835 owners of 1979 XJ12 sedans and 1982 to 1990 XJ-S vehicles because valves controlling the cruise control activator may not be working properly.
