A Thank You for a Pacemaker

Pacemaker recipient, 91-year-old Roy Sakioka, presented a donation of $100,000 to Frank Mendicina, president of White Memorial Medical Center Foundation, at a ceremony Jan. 11. Sakioka received a pacemaker in 1988, and the donation reflects his appreciation of the hospital and its medical staff. The funds are earmarked for the hospital’s cardiac services.

* The American Diabetes Assn. netted more than $40,000 at its “Romance on the High Seas” benefit, a black-tie dinner-dance held aboard the Queen Mary on Feb. 10. The money will be used for research and patient services.

* Concern II, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that pledges money for children’s cancer research, on Feb. 9 added $75,000 to its endowment fund, which supports the Brain Tumor Lab at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. The research lab was established by Concern II in l986 with an endowment of $150,000, now increased to $225,000.

* The Women’s Auxiliary of the California Pediatric & Family Medical Center held its annual fund-raiser Feb. 10 at the Bel Age Hotel and commemorated its 70th birthday of service to children of low-income families. The event, which included a silent auction, netted $25,000 to be used for a variety of medical treatments. A portion will be set aside for a new treatment room.

* An “Evening in Brazil,” sponsored by Environmental Media Assn. and the Rainforest Foundation, raised $1.2 million to benefit the Indians of the Amazonian rain forest in their struggle to protect their homeland and to further EMA’s work as a clearinghouse of environmental information.
