The deputy speaker of Parliament, accused by Malaysian opposition leaders of acting in pornographic videotapes, has agreed to step down, a government minister said Thursday.

The official Bernama news agency quoted Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Posts Samy Vellu as saying D. P. Vijandran had telephoned him from overseas to say he wanted to resign as deputy speaker but would remain a member of Parliament.

Bernama quoted Vellu as saying Vijandran, 46, had agreed to step down to save the government from embarrassment over the scandal.
