Libraries Seeking Reading Volunteers

Share

Older adult volunteers are being sought for the “Grandparents and Books” program at the seven Westside branches of the Los Angeles Public Library.

The branches are seeking older adults to entertain the children who come to the libraries, said Kathryn Carr, manager of the Western region of the Los Angeles Public Library.

“We are looking for volunteers, senior citizens, who can serve as sort of grandparents and read and share stories with the children,” said Carr. She said library officials are trying to expand the program to the entire region after finding it successful and popular in one or two branches last year.

The libraries are seeking older adults to work two to 10 hours a week reading and presenting stories to the children. The volunteers will be given step-by-step training by experts on how to read aloud and how to use puppets and flannel figures. Bilingual skills are helpful but not required.

Interested volunteers can call Carr at (213) 312-8323 or the Public Library at (213) 612-3320.

The Western regional branches and their addresses are as follows: Loyola Village, 7114 W. Manchester Ave.; Mar Vista, 12006 Venice Blvd.; Palisades, 861 Alma Real Drive; Robertson, 1719 S. Robertson Blvd.; Venice, 610 California Ave.; West Los Angeles regional branch, 11360 Santa Monica Blvd. and Westchester, 8946 Sepulveda Eastway.
