A federal grand jury in Alaska has returned a five-count criminal indictment against Exxon Corp. stemming from last spring’s oil spill in Prince William Sound, a government source said today.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the alleged criminal actions could result in penalties “in excess of $600 million” against Exxon Corp. and its subsidiary, Exxon Shipping Co.

The indictment came nearly a year after the Exxon Valdez released 11 million gallons of oil in Prince William Sound, causing widespread environmental damage in the nation’s worst oil spill.

The disclosure came as Atty. Gen. Richard Thornburgh scheduled a late-afternoon news conference for what aides said would be an announcement on the Exxon Valdez spill.
