A Mission Viejo man was seriously injured Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car while dashing across a four-lane street on his way to work, the California Highway Patrol said.

Daniel Blinn, 23, underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon for internal bleeding near his brain. He also suffered a broken neck and a fractured right leg, CHP Officer Ken Daily said. He was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, a hospital spokeswoman said.

According to a report by CHP Officer Marc Murdrick, the accident occurred about 9 a.m. on Cabot Road just south of Crown Valley Parkway.

Murdrick said that Maria Reyes, 60, of Laguna Hills was driving north on Cabot Road at about 35 m.p.h. when Blinn dashed across the street in front of her car. Reyes could not stop in time because her view of Blinn was obscured by a truck parked in the painted center-divider, Murdrick said.

Daily said no citation would be issued.

“He was just in a hurry to get to work and didn’t take that extra few minutes to be careful,” Daily said. “By the time (Reyes) saw him, it looked like he was darting out from behind the truck.”

Blinn is employed by Costco Wholesale Corp., which is opening a new outlet in Laguna Niguel on Thursday.
