Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc.: The Los Angeles-based parent of the Broadway and other department stores reported that its second-quarter net income rose nearly 48% from a year ago to $20 million. A year ago, earnings were depressed by an $8.3-million charge to retire debt. However, earnings from operations were down 9% from the year earlier period. Sales rose 5.8% to $984.9 million.
