SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : SDSU Women Rout San Jose State, 66-42
Crystal Lee had 15 assists and eight steals as San Diego State easily defeated visiting San Jose State, 66-42, in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game at Peterson Gym Thursday night.
Julie Evans had 24 points and nine rebounds for the Aztecs (7-21, 6-11), who led, 31-18, at halftime. Lee and Dee Dee Davis added 10 points apiece for SDSU, which concludes the regular season as host to Fresno State Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Hulett Brooks scored 15 and Lora Alexander 13 for San Jose State (4-22, 2-16).
BASEBALL
Craig Gastineau had a three-run home run, and freshman catcher David Swearingen went four for four as visiting Point Loma Nazarene defeated Biola in a nonconference game.
Mark Ratekin got his third victory in four decisions for PLNC (6-4-1). Biola is 4-7-1.
BOXING
Gary Butler of San Diego lost a 5-0 decision to James Johnson of Lawrence, Mass., in the semifinals of the 201-pound class at the U.S. Boxing Championships in Colorado Springs.
HALL OF FAME
Bill Walton and Charles Fletcher will be inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame at the 44th “Salute to the Champions,” at the Town and Country Convention Center March 13.
Fletcher set a world record in the 220-yard breaststroke in 1921 in Coronado and was captain of Stanford’s water polo team when it won a national championship. Walton played in 135 consecutive basketball games at Helix High, then went to UCLA and the NBA.
Fletcher and Walton will join 69 athletes in the San Diego Hall of Champions. For information, call 234-2544.
