The New Jersey Devils have gone to their minor league affiliate in Utica, N.Y., in an attempt to break out of a slump, and on Friday night the club’s action appears to have paid off as the Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 6-5, at East Rutherford, N.J.

Jon Morris and Pat Conacher, both called up from the American Hockey League club, scored their first goals of the NHL season to lead the Devils to their third victory in their last 16 games, and end the Penguins’ six-game winning streak.

The Devils’ six goals were their biggest output since a 9-6 loss to Washington on Jan. 16. Morris, recalled Wednesday, six days after Conacher, gave New Jersey the lead for good. He took a pass from Paul Ysebaert--another recent recall--and flicked a shot inside the right goalpost barely past goalie Wendell Young at 7:19 of the second period to give the Devils a 3-2 lead.

Detroit 3, Toronto 2--Steve Yzerman scored his second goal of the game with 1:16 left in overtime at Detroit, lifting the Red Wings out of last place in the Norris Division.

Yzerman, who tied the score with a power-play goal in the third period, took a pass from Dave Barr and beat goalie Jeff Reese with a low shot for his 53rd goal.

Referee Ron Hoggarth called a combined 272 minutes in penalties--132 in the first period--including 12 fighting majors, 12 misconducts and one game misconduct.

Hartford 4, Washington 3--Kevin Dineen scored twice in a 30-second span early in the third period to lead the Whalers at Landover, Md.

Dineen, who also assisted on Hartford’s second goal, tied the score at three goals apiece when he knocked in his own rebound from the left edge of the crease with 14:40 left in the third period.

He put the Whalers in front with a 10-foot shot into the upper left corner 30 seconds later.

Dean Evason assisted on both of Dineen’s goals.

Pat Verbeek also had two goals for the Whalers.

N.Y. Rangers 6, N.Y. Islanders 3--Darren Turcotte scored twice and John Ogrodnick had the tiebreaking goal early in the third period to lead the Rangers past the Islanders at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers extended their unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) and opened a six-point lead over the second-place Penguins.

The Islanders, who didn’t get a shot on goal until 13:21 into the first period, are winless in their last eight games.
