Escondido police were investigating two drive-by shooting incidents that occurred early Sunday and left one man dead and another injured, police said.

It was not known if there was any link between the two incidents, which occurred within a mile or so of each other. There was also no word on possible motives.

The first victim, identified as Andre Lindsay Ortega, 26, of Valley Center, was gunned down in the 2000 block of West Mission Avenue at 12:11 a.m., apparently as he was walking along the road, authorities said. Officers responded and attempted to revive the victim before the arrival of paramedics, who transported him to Palomar Medical Center. He died a short time later.
