Letter From Forbes Jolts Senator’s Staff

A letter in which the late Malcolm Forbes offers jokingly to vote on behalf of the dead for Sen. Rudy Boschwitz (R-Minn.) startled the senator’s staffers when it arrived in Boschwitz’s office last week.

The letter was dated Feb. 14 but did not arrive in the senator’s office until Feb. 26, three days after Forbes died in his sleep at age 70. Forbes apparently wrote the letter to say he would not be able to appear at a fund-raiser, an aide said. But in a bit of oddly prescient humor, Forbes also referred to the old vote-fraud practice of casting the votes of dead people.

“I’m certainly supportive, and if you can locate a tombstone or two for me to vote from, I’ll be happy to,” Forbes wrote.
