COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pacific Christian Falls in Basketball Final

Steve Welch scored 22 points and Brian Keiser, the tournament’s most valuable player, added 19, but Pacific Christian College lost to Maranatha Baptist, 114-96, in the championship game of the National Christian College Athletic Assn. tournament Saturday in Baton Rouge, La.

Mike Vincent, who played for Esperanza in High School and was also named to the all-tournament team, scored 15 points for Pacific Christian.

Terrell Cannon had 33 points for Maranatha Baptist (22-7), the tournament’s second-seeded team. Pacific Lutheran, the top-seeded team, finished the season at 28-10.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Cal State Fullerton 63, San Jose State 54--The Titans built a 33-23 halftime lead at Titan Gym, but San Jose State cut the deficit to 54-52 with two minutes left. Then Titan junior center Genia Miller scored on a layup with 1:50 left to make it 56-52 and Fullerton pulled away.

Fullerton (14-13, 9-9) finished fifth in the Big West Conference and will play fourth-place Fresno State Thursday in the conference tournament at Long Beach Arena.

Miller finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds, and she hit four of six free throws to set a school record of 163 free throws made in a season. She set the previous record of 161 last year.

Titan forward Jill Matyuch scored 17 points and guard Jeannine Battaglia had a career-high 11 assists.

Lora Alexander scored 27 points for San Jose State (4-23, 2-16).

In nonconference women’s softball:

UC Riverside 6-4 Southern California College 0-0--Tori Serapion’s single was the only hit for host SCC (8-6) in Saturday’s second game. Debbie Perry pitched a one-hitter. In the first game, Riverside’s Julie Fay pitched a six-hitter. Stephanie Wills of SCC had a single and double in the opener.

In the University of New Mexico women’s tennis tournament:

Oklahoma 9, UC Irvine 0--Only Stacey Cadigan, who lost, 7-6, 7-5, at No. 1 singles to Stacey Bullman, came close to a victory for the Anteaters (5-11) in the semifinals at Albuquerque. The Anteaters will play New Mexico for third place at 12:30 p.m. today.

In a nonconference track meet between Cal State Northridge, Stanford and host UC Irvine:

Stanford won both the men’s and women’s team competitions. Mel Bloch of Stanford outraced Irvine’s Buffy Rabbit in the women’s 1500- and 800-meter races and Stanford’s Marcus Hickerson won the men’s 400 meters and long jump. Matt Farmer jumped 7-foot 1/2-inch to win the high jump and Mike Morales won the hammer throw (204-7) as the Irvine men finished third in the tri-meet. Marieke Veltman won the long jump for the Irvine women, who also finished third. When the meet was scored as a double-dual meet, Irvine lost to Stanford but defeated Northridge in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
