Andy Moog took some tough shots, not all of them off sticks. But he made some big plays in Boston’s 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday at Chicago.

The Bruins’ goaltender stopped 29 shots, as Boston beat the Blackhawks for the 10th straight time since Dec. 20, 1986, while winning its 41st game, most in the NHL.

Two Craig Janney goals and one each by Bob Carpenter and Dave Poulin in a 23-second span of the third period gave the Bruins their 20th road win.

Moog improved his season record to 23-10-4, but he earned it. He claimed he was kicked by Chicago’s Steve Larmer and Steve Thomas, hit by Dirk Graham and pummeled by Larmer.

“They did exactly what (referee Andy VanHellemond) allowed them to do,” Moog said.

VanHellemond told Moog that as long as he was outside the crease it was legal for him to be hit.

The Blackhawks are now 0-10-1 against Boston since last beating the Bruins at the Boston Garden on Dec. 20, 1986.

Boston’s sixth win in its last seven games boosted the Bruins’ NHL point-leading total to 87.

Edmonton 6, Vancouver 3--Rookie Martin Gelinas, acquired from the Kings in the trade for Wayne Gretzky, scored three goals and defenseman Steve Smith had three assists at Edmonton.

Simpson had a goal and an assist while Graves, the center on the line, set up two of the goals by Gelinas. The win moved the Oilers back into first place in the Smythe Division, one point ahead of the idle Calgary Flames.

Pittsburgh 8, Minnesota 6--John Cullen had five points and scored the tie-breaking goal with 2:57 to play and Robbie Brown had three goals as the Penguins withstood a five-minute, third-period power play to win at Pittsburgh.

Reserve goaltender Wendell Young allowed just one goal on 18 North Stars’ shots as Pittsburgh won its sixth straight at home and Minnesota fell to 1-15-1 in its last 17 road games.

Washington 4, New Jersey 3--Steve Leach scored a disputed goal early in the third period and the Capitals held on for the win at Landover, Md.

Leach took the puck away from the Devils’ Brendan Shanahan and flipped a shot into goaltender Sean Burke, whose momentum took him back into the net. Burke argued with referee Denis Morel that he had stopped the puck outside the goal line, but Morel disagreed.

Buffalo 5, Quebec 3--Pierre Turgeon and Rick Vaive assisted on each other’s goals at Buffalo as the Sabres increased their point total to 81, second-best in the NHL.

Buffalo is 30-1-1 when it has scored four or more goals.
