Lee Atwater, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has a non-malignant tumor in the right side of his head, a neurosurgeon said today after a needle biopsy.

Atwater was hospitalized Monday after collapsing during a speech.

Dr. Edward R. Laws, chairman of the department of neurosurgery at George Washington University Medical Center, said that no surgery is planned and that he expects Atwater to be released from the hospital by the end of the week and be able to resume normal activities next week.

“Lee Atwater completed tests this morning which revealed a small non-malignant growth in the right side of his head,” the doctor said in a statement released by the RNC.

White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said Atwater received calls at the hospital from President Bush. Another source said former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard M. Nixon also called Atwater.
