NATION : 3 Dead, 119 Hurt as Philadelphia Subway Train Hits Tunnel Beams

PHILADELPHIA — A crowded subway train derailed and crashed into tunnel support beams this morning, shearing a car in half, killing three people and injuring at least 119 others, authorities said.
Five people carried from the tunnel were listed in critical condition at hospitals.
James Sweeney, a transit inspector, said the train hit three tunnel support beams. He said a preliminary inspection did not indicate any danger of a cave-in.
“The second and third cars were bent, and the whole side of the second car was torn off like it was peeled like a sardine can, and the floor was ripped out,” said passenger Mark Robinson, who was going home from work as a cashier.
“I saw people pinned in the car, and they couldn’t move and yet no one was hollering, and that was odd,” Robinson said.
