LA HABRA : City Orders Firm to Replace Trees
The City Council has ordered the Hopkins Development Company, which is building a new shopping center at the corner of Imperial Highway and Beach Boulevard, to replace a large collection of trees and shrubs accidentally destroyed during construction work.
The morning of Feb. 20, a work crew destroyed about 60 trees, many of which were more than 20 years old, said Jeffrey B. Armour, senior development manager for the La Habra Marketplace project and a partner with Hopkins Development.
Armour expressed his company’s regrets to the council. “We are sick about (the loss),” he said.
The council rejected the idea of constructing a block wall in place of the foliage.
The new shopping complex will occupy the western portion of what was previously known as Fashion Square. The city has authorized the sale of bonds to fund some aspects of construction, including parking.
The bonds will be repaid with sales tax revenue generated by the improved mall, City Manager Lee Risner said.
