From Times wire services

The NCAA has given Clemson an additional week to respond to allegations its football program violated recruiting regulations, a spokeswoman said today.

The extension gives the university until March 19, instead of Monday, to formally respond to the allegations, Clemson spokeswoman Cathy Sams said.

David Berst, the NCAA’s assistant executive director for enforcement, granted the extension in a letter to Clemson President Max Lennon. Lennon requested the delay to “ensure that the university’s report is as complete and comprehensive as possible.”

The extra week will help Clemson officials interview a few more people and compile other documents, Sams said.

The NCAA alleges that Clemson’s football program broke 13 rules from 1984 to ’88 under then-Coach Danny Ford. The charges include allegations that Clemson coaches gave money to players, entertained recruits and provided the recruits with free transportation in violation of NCAA rules.

The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions is scheduled to review the case against Clemson at its April 20-22 meeting in Kansas City. Mo.
