Ron McAnally, John Henry Nominated to Hall of Fame

John Henry, two-time horse of the year, and his former trainer, Ron McAnally, have been nominated for induction into the Racing Hall of Fame.

Five nominations in each of five categories were announced Wednesday by John von Stade, president of the National Museum of Racing. One from each of the categories will be inducted on Aug. 9.

John Henry, at one time the all-time biggest money winner with $6,591,860 in career earnings, was the Eclipse Award winner in 1981 and ’84. McAnally trained not only John Henry but also 88 other stakes winners, including last year’s champion mare Bayakoa.

Other horses nominated were Arts and Letters, 1969 Horse of the Year; High Gun, champion 3-year-old in 1954 and champion older horse in 1955; Hill Prince, 1950 Horse of the Year, and Noor, champion handicapper in 1950.

Nominated along with McAnally were Phil Johnson, who trained 65 stakes winners; Tom J. Kelly, trainer of 61 stakes winners; Willard Proctor, trainer of 49 stakes winners including Convenience, and Tennessee Wright, America’s leading trainer in 1957, ’59 and ’61. Wright died in 1966.

Jockeys nominated were Jorge Velasquez, Sandy Hawley, Larry Snyder, Don Brumfield and Eddie Delahoussaye.

Nominated in the distaff category were All Along, Bold ‘n Determined, Parlo, Princess Rooney and Royal Native.

In the pre-World War II category for horses, the nominees were Black Helen, Bimelech, Borrow, Cavalcade and Morvich.

Also, the Hall of Fame announced that Secretariat’s owner, Helen Chenery, and his jockey, Ron Turcotte, are among those scheduled to attend ceremonies in the horse’s honor here on April 7.
