Apple to Debut Fastest Macintosh: Apple Computer sent out invitations to a March 19 news conference, where it is expected to roll out its Macintosh IIfx, its most powerful and expensive Macintosh yet. Apple is keeping mum about the new model, but trade journals said it will operate at a speed at least twice as fast as the IIci, Apple’s current top-of-the-line personal computer, and will be priced starting at $10,000 for a basic system. Analysts, however, say there is more of a need for a basic, inexpensive version of the Macintosh.
