A man lost control of his pickup truck on Pacific Coast Highway and was injured Wednesday evening when the vehicle flipped over, pinning him inside for 30 minutes, authorities said.

Sgt. Ken Cowell of the Newport Beach Police Department said the victim, who was later charged with drunk driving, was traveling west near the Santa Ana Bridge when the accident happened just after 5 p.m.

“The truck flipped over on its top and was flattened right down to the top of the door,” Cowell said.

The Newport Beach Fire Department used the “jaws of life” hydraulic device to free the man from the truck, Cowell said. He was airlifted to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he was arrested and charged. The name of the man and his condition were not immediately known.

Police blocked off the westbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway between Balboa Boulevard and Brookhurst Street for about two hours after the accident. Eastbound lanes were closed for about 45 minutes, Cowell said.
