Another Republican has announced plans to seek the seat of outgoing Assemblyman Dennis Brown.

Banking executive Peter E. Von Elten on Thursday added his name to the contest, joining Long Beach City Councilwoman Jan Hall and Huntington Beach Mayor Thomas J. Mays. The three will face off in the June 5 primary election.

The 58th District straddles Orange and Los Angeles counties and includes Huntington Beach, Seal Beach and Long Beach.

Joel R. Bishop, a computer systems analyst, is the only Democrat who has announced his campaign for the predominantly Republican district.

Brown announced Monday that he would not seek re-election, saying that he planned to pursue other interests.

Hall said in a statement, “An opportunity has presented itself to continue to serve the public at the state level; an opportunity to continue the work I have pursued for the past 20 years, namely to strive to see that government does everything it can to improve transportation, housing and clean up our environment.”

Hall is a former president of the Southern California Rapid Transit District and chairwoman of the California Commission on the Status of Women.

Von Elten, 47, is chairman of the board of Newport Beach-based Charter Service Corp., a subsidiary of Charter Bank.
