COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Goodcase Keeps UC Irvine Rolling With 9-2 Victory

UC Irvine won its 11th game in its last 13 by defeating UC Riverside, 9-2, in a nonconference baseball game at UC Irvine Friday.

Mike Goodcase led the Anteaters with a three-run home run in the third inning to give Irvine a 3-0 lead. Goodcase had three hits and five runs batted in.

Osmar DeChavez went four for four and scored three runs for Irvine (14-8). Ken Whitworth (6-1) pitched his third consecutive complete game, allowing 11 hits, two runs and striking out four.

In other nonconference baseball games:

U.S. International 3, Cal State Fullerton 2 (10 innings)--Bruce Moutaw had an unassisted triple play in the first inning and Kyle Sebach hit a solo home run in the 10th inning to lead host USIU (6-12-1). Rich Gonzales had two hits, including a home run, and Steve Sisko had two hits for Cal State Fullerton (8-7). USIU only had four hits--two home runs and two doubles.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s baseball:

Chapman 10, Cal Poly Pomona 2--Jody Garcia hit a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, to give Chapman a 3-0 first-inning lead at Hart Park in Orange. Mike Kelly had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Jason Rolish had two hits, two runs and an RBI for Chapman (10-9, 2-4).

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1-1, California 0-0--In the first game, winning pitcher Ann Van Dortrecht struck out eight and allowed just three hits to lead Cal State Fullerton (14-5). In the second game, Joy Tiner singled home Carey Hess from second base to lead the Titans at Berkeley.

In Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. men’s volleyball:

Stanford 3, UC Irvine 0--Dave Goss had 13 kills to lead Stanford (8-2, 8-1) to a 15-7, 15-10, 15-11 victory at UC Irvine. Irvine (3-10, 0-10) was led by Steve Florentine’s 14 kills and James Felton’s 13.

In men’s nonconference tennis:

Southern California College 5, Whittier 4--Visiting Southern California College (4-8) was led by Scott Siler, who won both of his matches. He defeated Roland Chavez, 7-5, 6-1, in singles and teamed with David Manley in doubles to defeat Isreal Macias and Van Vickers, 6-2, 6-3. Whittier is 2-8.
