ANAHEIM : Edison Co. Will Pay City $10 Million

The City Council accepted a $10-million settlement from Southern California Edison Co. Tuesday night, ending a claim over disputed wholesale rates.

The settlement is the result of almost 20 separate agreements between the city and the power company which have been pending since 1971.

Whether that money will trickle down to Anaheim residents in the form of rebates from the city-owned utility company has not yet been decided by the city Public Utilities Department.

Anaheim’s Public Utilities Department buys energy from Edison and other suppliers.

In addition, Edison has offered separate settlements to the cities of Azusa, Banning, Colton and Riverside, which have also challenged past wholesale power rates.

Once these cities agree to settlements offered by Edison, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will grant final approval.

Also on Tuesday, the City Council voted 4 to 1 to approve construction of a 44-unit apartment complex that would contain nine units for low- or moderate-income households.

Plans for the complex, at 3424 and 3428 W. Orange Ave. just east of Knott Avenue, call for eight bachelor units, eight one-bedroom units and 28 two-bedroom apartments.
