Chiropractors Work for LIFE

On HOPE Day (Helping Other People Eat) Feb. 14, 200 members of the Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society treated 12,400 patients throughout the county in exchange for food donations for LIFE (Love Is Feeding Everyone). They collected 60,000 pounds of nonperishable food, as well as cash donations of $2,000 from chiropractors and their patients. The food and money were distributed to more than 70 local social service agencies.

The Child Study Center of Saint John’s Hospital and Health Center was the beneficiary of a fund-raising “Day at the Races” at Del Mar held in the fall. The Hope Guild, a hospital support group, presented a check for $8,000 to Sister Marie Madeleine, president of Saint John’s, at a luncheon ceremony Feb. 15 at the health center. The CSC provides support services to Los Angeles County children with special needs and their families.

Marianne Frostig Center of Educational Therapy, Pasadena, received $5,500 to help provide learning-disabled youngsters with field trips, books and supplies. The Parent Group of the center raised the money at its annual Flea Market Feb. 24. Jeanette Resnik was chairwoman. Linda Thieben is development director.

The City of Hope Merchant’s Club celebrated 57 years of fund raising at its Regal Ball March 3 at the Beverly Hilton with the announcement that the fashion industry support group had raised $2.2 million. The club had raised a total of $35 million over the years. Roger Odwak is club president; his wife, Myrna, chaired the ball.

Bnai Zion Western Region Council’s eighth annual presentation ceremony of America-Israel Friendship Media Award Dinner Feb. 25 at Sinai Temple, honored Margaret Marketa Novak and raised net proceeds of $43,000. A portion, $18,000, will be donated to Bnai Zion Medical Center-Hannah Khoushi Early Childhood Development Center in Haifa, and BZMC Pharmacy will receive $25,000 (donated by the Milken Foundation).

American Diabetes Assn. “Big Bands at the Biltmore ‘90” benefit March 2 sponsored by The Foothill Associates netted more than $80,000, making a total of $400,000 raised to date for ADA by the associates. American Diabetes Assn. is the nation’s leading voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research and education.

The United Jewish Fund was the recipient of $874,000 raised at the March 8 Inaugural Valley Community Dinner at Warner Center Marriott Hotel, Woodland Hills. Mike Nissenson was event chair, Ronald Blanc campaign chair, Elaine Berke president and Joan Praver women’s campaign chair. United Jewish Fund supports humanitarian and social services for people in the Greater Los Angeles area, Israel and 33 other countries.

The Friends of Adam Brock benefit “Brunch and Jazz With Celebs” sponsored by Debbie Flesch and Candice Slobin held March 11 at Stratton’s Restaurant in Encino netted about $40,000 to help defray medical expenses for 10-year-old Adam who has leukemia and needs blood tests to find a bone-marrow match. The National Bone Marrow Registry also benefited, thanks to 500 guests who donated blood.
