A 25-year-old busboy was shot in the face during a late-night robbery attempt at a Korean restaurant, police said Thursday.

Margarito Alvarado, whose address is not known, sustained a bullet wound to the cheek in the incident Wednesday, officials said. Alvarado was listed in fair condition Thursday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, hospital spokeswoman Fran Tardiff said. He is paralyzed from the neck down, and doctors do not know whether the paralysis will be permanent, she said.

The robber, a man, entered the Mihoo Restaurant in the 9000 block of Garden Grove Boulevard at 11:25 p.m., just before closing time, Garden Grove Police Sgt. Ken Whitley said.

When the robber opened fire, “everybody tried to flee, and this one guy got hit,” Whitley said. The robber left empty-handed, Whitley said.

The robber is described as being in his late 20s, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, thin, and with black hair and brown eyes.
