The public will have a rare chance to see a unique collection of cars and wild game trophies when the private Vintage Museum of Transportation and Wildlife opens its doors Sunday to benefit the Ventura County Maritime Museum.

Owned by Otis Chandler, chairman of the executive committee of the board of directors of the Los Angeles Times, the Vintage Museum will host an open house from 3 to 6 p.m.

Chandler’s private collection includes 90 rare and antique automobiles and railroad cars, including a rare 1931 Duesenberg Tourster a Santa Fe railroad caboose and a narrow-gauge steam locomotive.

Funds from the $100-per-ticket benefit will go to toward constructing the Ventura County Maritime Museum building at Fisherman’s Village in Channel Islands Harbor.

Officials hope to raise $50,000 at the open house.

Now headquartered on Pacific Avenue, the Maritime Museum has a warehouse full of historic sailing vessels, including exact scale models and miniature replicas of galleons, men o’ war and clipper ships, some dating to the 1700s.

Tickets are available by contacting Maritime Museum officials at 486-9867, and will also be available at the door.
