THE SIDELINES : Indonesian Throng Cheers Ali
More than 70,000 Indonesians chanted “We love you, Ali,” as former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali spoke to them before and after Muslim Sabbath services at a mosque today.
Ali is in the country for a boxing and music extravaganza Sunday.
Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes will meet James (Quick) Tillis in a six-round exhibition and Tim Witherspoon fights Greg Gunnell in a scheduled 10-round heavyweight bout.
The crowd waiting to see Ali grew so large that security people kept the former champion in the mosque for an hour after the service and finally hustled him out through an exit that allowed him to avoid the throng.
