Scott Pruett, co-rookie of the year in the 1989 Indianapolis 500, was listed in stable condition after surgery to repair two lumbar vertebrae at the base of his spinal column.
Pruett earlier had surgery to repair fractures to both his legs.
Pruett, 29, of Roseville, Calif., suffered the injuries on Friday when he crashed into a concrete barrier during testing in West Palm Beach, Fla.
