HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : McGuire Gets 18 Strikeouts, No Decision

The Granada Hills High baseball team opened Northwest Valley Conference play with a one-run loss to Cleveland, followed by a two-run loss to Kennedy and an extra-inning, one-run loss to San Fernando.

Could anything else go awry?

While the Highlanders didn’t lose another nail-biter in Tuesday’s conference game against host El Camino Real, they didn’t win, either, finishing in a 3-3 tie in a game called after nine innings because of darkness.

El Camino Real left-hander Ryan McGuire struck out 18 batters, walked six and allowed six hits.

McGuire was matched by right-hander Robert Vasquez, who threw a seven-hitter, struck out three and walked four. Granada Hills scored an unearned run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Granada Hills (1-6-1, 0-3-1 in league play) scored twice in the first inning on Gabe Miller’s two-run homer to right-center field.

El Camino Real (3-0-1, 3-0-1) scored three times in the fourth. Greg Lederman, who had two hits, singled home the first run. Chris Castillo capped the rally with a two-run single down the line in left.
