Countywide : Fair Board Moves Parade to a Saturday

Share

The Ventura County Fair Board has decided, over the protests of some local merchants, to hold the 1990 Fair Parade on a Saturday.

The parade, which traditionally has taken place on a Friday morning, will be held this year on Aug. 18 at 10 a.m.

The board held two public hearings on the parade and was swayed by suggestions that a Saturday parade would allow greater participation. Some downtown business owners voiced concern that a weekend event would interrupt an important business day, so the board moved the starting time from 11 a.m. to 10 a.m. to get the event over with as soon as possible.

The parade is part of the Ventura County Fair, a tradition of more than 100 years. The fair, which 300,000 attended last year, will run from Aug. 15-26.

County Fair Board spokeswoman Teri Raley said this year’s parade will be different in another way: It will run west on Main Street from Catalina Street into the fairgrounds--in the opposite direction of those in years past.
