County IN BRIEF : MID-WILSHIRE : Suspect in 20 Bank Robberies Captured
A 28-year-old man believed to be the so-called Mid-Wilshire bandit was captured Wednesday afternoon by Beverly Hills police, who began pursuing him immediately after he allegedly held up a Wilshire Boulevard bank. When officers arrested Devere A. Jones about two miles from a Bank of America branch in the 8300 block of Wilshire, they found $1,200 stuffed in his socks and underwear. Officer Sammy Lee was writing a traffic ticket only a block from the bank when he heard the crime broadcast and spotted Jones’ car, police said. Beverly Hills Police Lt. David Griffey said Jones, of Los Angeles, is suspected of robbing seven banks in Beverly Hills and 13 others nearby. Jones did not use a gun in the Wednesday robbery, police said, adding that he announced a holdup and asked for the “big bills.” Jones was booked on suspicion of robbery and held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
