$20,000 Raised for Cardiac Care

Los Angeles Heart Institute of the St. Vincent Medical Center was the recipient of $20,000 raised at the “Heart to Heart” benefit dinner attended by 600 guests. The event was sponsored by the Los Angeles Evergreen Lions Club Feb. 24 at the Biltmore Hotel. Proceeds will be used for cardiac care for needy children at the not-for-profit medical center. Julia Lee was event chairwoman.

A rummage sale on Feb. 24 raised $4,500 for the Valley Senior Service & Resource Center. Funds will help provide home-delivered meals and other support services for senior citizens living in their own homes. The Organization for the Needs of the Elderly (O.N.E.) sponsored the sale.

White Memorial Medical Center’s First Classic Feb. 26 was held at the Wilshire Country Club, featuring 18 holes of golf and an awards banquet. The Medical Center’s $2.3-million expansion and renovation program is the beneficiary of the $25,000 raised at the golf classic.

Variety Children’s Charities’ Big Heart Community Achievement Award gala dinner Feb. 27 at the Century Plaza Hotel honored Vista Del Mar president George Konheim for more than 20 years of service. He is also president of the Reiss-Davis Child Study Center. Some of the more than $750,000 raised will be used to fund the George Konheim Fitting Room in the UCLA Sherrill C. Corwin Limb Bank. Funds were also raised for 10 new Variety Sunshine Coaches to provide transportation for handicapped and disabled children to various community programs.

St. Joseph Center raised $50,000 March 3 at its fifth annual dinner-dance benefit for the Westside’s low-income and homeless at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. This amount included a $10,000 contribution from First Federal Bank of California. Honored were Cecelia and Cliff Waeschle for their ongoing support of the center. Stephanie Edwards was hostess.

Children’s Cancer Research Fund’s “Kids 4 Kids” Carnival March 4, held near the finish line of the 1990 Los Angeles Marathon, estimates a profit of more than $25,000 from corporate sponsors (ABC, Allied-Signal Aerospace Co., ARCO, Bank of America, Great Earth Vitamin Stores, Harbor-Benedetti and Tishman West Companies,) tickets and other sources. CCRF provides support on a national level for clinical research in childhood cancer and to improving the medical environment for children.

Easter Seal Society of Los Angeles & Orange Co. Inc. ended its nationally televised fund-raiser March 4 with a net of $42,076,892 for Easter Seal services and programs. Contributions from Los Angeles and Orange counties totaled $1,064,997, with 90% to be used to provide programs and services for physically handicapped and developmentally disabled people. Hosts of the local Telethon were Dick and Pat Van Patten, Marta Weller of KTLA News and Sharon Lewis of KCBS Radio.

American Diabetes Assn. Leadership Committee raised more than $72,000 at the 8th annual Celebrity Waiter/Waitress Brunch and Auction March 10 at Bentley’s Restaurant/Bar in Santa Monica (with costs underwritten by Bentley’s). Other co-sponsors were Toyota and KLSX, allowing every dollar raised to go directly to ADA. Celebrities served 900 guests. Proceeds will go toward summer camp for children with diabetes, research cure studies and education programs. Event co-chairmen were Michael and Nancy Rouse.

Friends of the Junior Arts Center held its “Feast for the Senses,” fund-raiser March 10 at the new Neutrogena Corp. More than 220 guests viewed CEO Lloyd Cotsen’s art collection, and bids on fine wines, art and jewelry raised almost $30,000. Proceeds will help finance expanded programs at the Junior Arts Center.

Glendale Adventist Medical Center’s sixth annual “Gala ‘90--An Affair of the Heart,” held March 10 at the Biltmore Hotel, raised more than $75,000 toward the purchase of an additional new heart-lung machine for the Medical Center. Honoree/chairman Vonnie Rossman was given a tribute for her service to the center which has served the community since 1905.
