Nanette Guilford; ‘The Baby Star’ of Opera

Share

Nanette Guilford, reported to have been the youngest singer ever signed by the Metropolitan Opera when she signed her first contract in 1923 and one of few American singers of that era to establish an artistic reputation without studying in Europe, has died in a New York City hospital.

She was 86 when she died last Saturday and had long made her home in New York City.

She said she was 18 when she signed her Met contract and throughout her career was called “the baby star” of opera.
