COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Doubles Team Leads UCI Into Tournament Final

The Anteaters defeated Wisconsin, 5-3, Saturday to advance to the finals of the UC Irvine men’s tennis invitational.

Ninth-ranked Irvine will play seventh-ranked Harvard at the UC Irvine tennis stadium at 1 p.m. today. Harvard defeated Auburn, 5-3, in the other semifinal.

Irvine (14-6) and Wisconsin were tied at three sets each after the singles competition, but Irvine’s Trevor Kronemann and Richard Lubner teamed to defeat Joey Deer and Bryan Nelson, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 1 doubles, and Shige Kanroji and Neel Grover defeated Jim Mirsberger and Dave Mirsberger, 7-5, 6-4, in the No. 3 doubles.

In the Cal State Fullerton softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 1, Oregon 0--Ann Van Dortrecht (15-3) pitched a two-hitter to lead top-ranked Fullerton (24-8). Nikki Lewis’ single drove home Charlotte Wiley in the fourth for Fullerton. The Titans will play Arizona, a 1-0 winner over Utah, at 9 a.m. today in one championship semifinal. Oklahoma State and Fresno State meet in the other semifinal.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Christ College Irvine 11-5, Southern California College 4-1--Darcy Schipporeit, Tracy Schultz and Michelle Vail each had two hits for Christ College Irvine (17-12, 4-2 in conference) in the first game. In the second, Tanya Guzman had a double and two runs batted in, and Schultz had two hits. SCC is 1-3 in conference play.

In nonconference baseball:

UC Irvine 11, Wisconsin 4--Billy Bardens had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead host UC Irvine. The Anteaters’ 20-9 record equals last year’s victory total.

California 13, Cal State Fullerton 9--Fullerton led, 6-3, going into the eighth inning, but gave up five runs in each of the final two innings. The Titans scored three times in the ninth. Mike Harrison singled, doubled, hit a two-run home run and had five RBIs for Cal (12-19). Rich Gonzales had four hits, including two doubles, scored three times and had an RBI for Fullerton (14-11).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman 9, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1--Curt Ludesma was four for four, including a double, and had two RBIs for visiting Chapman (16-12, 7-5). Mike Kelly had three hits and scored twice and Jason Rolish had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice for Chapman. Dave Paveloff (5-4) pitched a five-hitter.
