VENTURA : Schools Seek Funds to Feed 300 Students
Three Ventura schools could begin serving breakfast to about 300 students next year if the district obtains federal funding to start meal programs at each school.
Ventura Unified School District board members voted unanimously Tuesday to apply for about $65,000 in federal funds to start breakfast programs at Mar Vista High School and Montalvo and Junipero Serra elementary schools.
The money, available from a $3-million federal program targeting low-income children, would be used to buy kitchen equipment.
With school districts statewide applying for the funds, district Director of Food Services Priscilla Alquist said competition for funds will likely be keen.
“We really don’t know if we’ll get the money,” Alquist said. “It could be that every district in the state will be trying to take advantage of this.”
The district already has breakfast programs at ten schools. The schools serve free breakfasts for students who qualify, as well as reduced- and regular-priced meals.
