From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A former Huntington Beach resident convicted of killing her husband and sentenced to life in prison escaped from the California Institution for Women, prison authorities said. Jeanette Hughes, 36, was discovered missing after being escorted into a visiting room to see her father, James Tugwell. Hughes was found guilty in 1984 of killing her husband, James. Her first parole hearing was to be in March, 1998. Officials said they determined that Hughes did not escape over or under any of the fences surrounding the prison, but they declined to speculate publicly how Hughes could have gotten away.
