WOMEN’S TENNIS
No. 17 University of San Diego took all singles matches and upset No. 9 Pepperdine, 6-0, on Tuesday. In singles, Tonya Fuller, Aby Brayton, Sakolwan Kacharoen, Christy Drage, Margo Mullally and Karen Lauer all won as USD (9-7) avenged an earlier 6-3 loss at Pepperdine (13-7).
BASEBALL
UC San Diego, ranked No. 11 in Division III, swept a doubleheader from Menlo College, 8-4 and 9-2, at Menlo. UCSD (12-8-2) has now won eight of 10.
In the first game, Anthony Sanchez went two for three, including a two-run home run in the seventh inning, and had three RBIs. In the second, freshman left-hander Ryan Flanagan relieved starter Rick Rupkey, who left with a sore shoulder, and threw 3 1/3 shutout innings. Henry Jimenez was four for four with three RBIs.
Cal State Fullerton’s Phil Nevin hit a two-run home run in the fifth to help the Titans battle back from a three-run deficit and defeat USD, 9-4.
USD (14-18) took its early lead on home runs from Kevin Herde and Rick Doane.
Cal Lutheran outscored Point Loma Nazarene, 16-2, as PLNC pitcher Chris Gunnett suffered his first loss against three victories.
SOFTBALL
U.S. International split a doubleheader with No. 6 Nebraska, losing the first, 3-2, and coming back to win the second, 2-0. In the second game, Karen Winkler started her first game for USIU (15-19) and earned the shutout. She also went three for three. Nebraska (12-10) won the first game by squeezing home a run in the bottom of the seventh.
