Chargers Sign Lineman Toth

The Chargers came to terms with their eighth Plan B free agent Tuesday when offensive guard Tom Toth of the Miami Dolphins agreed to a two-year contract, his agent said.

Toth, 6-feet-5 and 282 pounds, had been a part-time starter in four seasons with the Dolphins. He selected the Chargers over Atlanta, Dallas and the Raiders, said agent J. Nelson Wood of Mount Vernon, Ill.

“The main thing was the opportunity in our mind for Tom to start and that (General Manager) Bobby Beathard is building an organization there,” Wood said.

Toth, 27, joined Miami in 1986 as a free agent from the New England Patriots. Toth, a 1985 fourth-round draft choice out of Western Michigan, was released by the Patriots after having spent the season on injured reserve.

He is the second Plan B offensive lineman to agree to join the Chargers. Earlier, they signed Mark Rodenhauser, a center and long snapper from the Minnesota Vikings.
