Soviets to Fight at Sports Arena

Promoter Lou Falcigno announced Wednesday he will be presenting a boxing card featuring five fighters from the Soviet Union on April 17 at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Former North American Boxing Federation champion Tony “Bazooka” DeLuca, will also fight on the card. The five Soviet fighters began their tour Tuesday night in Reno, Nev. with five victories.

Super heavyweight Yuri Vaulin, 26, is considered to be the most talented of the Soviet fighters on tour. He went 227-30 during his amateur career.

BASEBALL

San Diego State will play Brigham Young, the defending regular season Western Athletic Conference champion, in consecutive doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m. at Smith Field. The four-game series had been scheduled to begin with a single game on Thursday.

SDSU (20-10, 4-0) is off to its best WAC start since 1981. BYU (14-12) has not played any conference games.

BASKETBALL

Todd Lee has been hired as a full-time assistant at the University of San Diego. Lee, 26, was a part-time assistant to Coach Hank Egan in 1989-90 and an assistant at Southwest Community College for the previous two seasons.

FOOTBALL

The Martin Bayless/San Diego Chargers football camp for underprivileged students and academic achievers will be held April 9-11 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Students--grades 7-12--wishing to participate must submit their latest report card to the Chargers’ ticket office no later than Wednesday, April 4, for consideration to this free camp.

Among Bayless and other Chargers, the instructors include Randall Cunningham, Keith Byars and Eric Allen (Point Loma High) of the Eagles, Carl Banks (Giants), Greg Bell (Rams) and former San Diego State tight end Rob Awalt (Cardinals). For more information, contact the Chargers at 280-2111.

WOMEN’S GOLF

U.S. International is in third with a score of 313 after the first round of the 54-hole Rainbow Wahine Invitational at Kaneohe Klipper Country Club in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Arizona leads the three-round tournament at 293 followed by UCLA at 309.

USIU’s Kim Millies is tied for second with Arizona’s Paige Gilbert at 73. Debbie Parks of Arizona leads with a 5-under round of 67.
