SPORTSCOPE : UCLA Women Will Get Back Into Action With Three Matches at Tennis Center

The second-ranked UCLA women’s tennis team (15-2), idle last week, will resume action with three matches at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on campus. The Bruins will play host to Nevada Las Vegas at 1:30 p.m. Friday , Arizona at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Arizona State at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The No. 5 Pepperdine men’s tennis team (20-3 at the start of the week) extended its dual-match winning streak to 14 before losing to Arizona State, 5-3, last Sunday in the final of the first Penn National Collegiate Invitational. The Waves will entertain San Diego State at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Last week Pepperdine defeated Duke, 5-1, and then won its first two matches in the Penn tournament, beating Northwestern, 5-2, and Miami, 6-0.

David Wells-Roth of the Waves is ranked 13th nationally in singles and has a 16-5 record, and freshman teammate Alejo Mancisidor is No. 33 and 20-3.

The No. 9 Pepperdine women’s tennis team (13-6 as the week began) will play host to Harvard at 1:30 p.m. today and to Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. Saturday and play at San Diego State at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Last week the Waves edged Princeton, 5-4.

Pepperdine’s Ginger Helgeson (9-2) is ranked sixth in the nation in singles, and teammate Janna Kovacevich (15-3) is No. 18.

The Santa Monica College men’s tennis team (8-5 overall and 5-4 in the Western State Conference as the week began) will play at Cuesta at 2 p.m. today. Last week Pierce edged the Corsairs, 5-4.

The No. 8 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team (9-10 overall and 4-9 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.) will play host to USC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and to No. 2 UCLA (18-2, 12-2) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Firestone Fieldhouse.

UCLA was idle last week. Pepperdine lost last week to Loyola Marymount in four games and to Cal State Long Beach in three.

The No. 2 UCLA women’s softball team (27-4 overall at the start of the week) will play Saturday at No. 18 California (24-11 overall and 6-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference) and Sunday at Santa Clara.

The UCLA women’s track team, idle since a 97-66 victory over Fresno State on March 17, will compete in the Cal State Northridge Invitational at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Members of the Santa Monica College men’s and women’s track teams will split up and take part in two meets on Saturday. Some will compete in the Bakersfield Relays starting at 9 a.m., and others will be in the Cal State Northridge Invitational, which starts at 9 a.m.

Several SMC competitors fared well last week at the Santa Barbara Relays.

LaTanya Davenport set a meet record of 14.77 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, the second-best time in Southern California this year, and the 4-by-400 relay team of Marlon Singleton, Adelbert Baylis, Sidney Morris and Aaron Echols won in 3:20.8.

The Santa Monica College baseball team (16-14, 4-6 in the WSC at the start of the week) will play at Bakersfield at 2 p.m. today and play host to College of the Canyons at 1 p.m. Saturday at Marine Park. Last week the Corsairs lost to Canyons, 5-2, and Oxnard, 6-5.
