COUNTYWIDE : D.A. Clears Flynn in Fund-Raiser Dispute

The Ventura County district attorney’s office on Thursday cleared 5th District Supervisor John Flynn of intentionally failing to disclose that his St. Patrick’s Day party was actually a political fund-raiser.

Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury in a statement said that the complaints were unfounded and that there were “no legal prohibitions that apply.” Officials interviewed Flynn and his campaign treasurer during the inquiry.

However, because the mailer did not identify the Flynn for Supervisor campaign committee, campaign workers were in technical but not criminal violation of the law that requires mailers to clearly state the name, address and city of the candidate or committee.

Two Oxnard men, Scott Bollinger and Paul Dolan, lodged the complaint more than a week ago with the district attorney’s office.

About 1,400 people attended Flynn’s March 18 party, which included a band, food, prizes and a poll on local issues. Printed on the $10 tickets people bought to attend was the phrase “Flynn for Supervisor.”

Officials said they will send the results of the investigation to the state Fair Political Practices Commission, which investigates charges of campaign violations by publicly elected officials.
