A man abducted his estranged wife from the grade school where she taught, shot her to death in a vacant lot, and then shot and wounded himself, authorities said.

Heidi Lin Einwechter, 27, was dead on arrival at Loma Linda University Medical Center on Thursday, said Jim Bryant, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Eric Einwechter, 24, was on life-support systems at San Bernardino County Medical Center on Friday, Bryant said. Hospital officials told investigators Einwechter was not expected to live, Bryant said.

The couple lived in Moreno Valley in neighboring Riverside County.

Family members told the Riverside Press Enterprise that the shootings occurred a day after Mrs. Einwechter told her husband she wanted a divorce.

Mrs. Einwechter reportedly carried with her a restraining order barring her husband from coming within 100 yards of her.

Einwechter allegedly was arguing with his wife in the cab of his pickup truck at 8:15 a.m. Thursday when he suddenly drove away from the parking lot at Riley Elementary School, Bryant said.

The couple was later seen at several nearby locations, including a convenience market where Einwechter apparently took a handgun belonging to the market’s owner, Bryant said.
