Costa Mesa’s Scotty Brant Fares Well in Speedway Debut

Scotty Brant, 19, of Costa Mesa finished fourth in the scratch main event and second in the handicap main event Friday in front of 5,632 on opening night of the weekly Speedway motorcycle program at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

In the four-lap scratch main, Brad Oxley of San Clemente finished first, Steve Lucero of Riverside second and Lance King of Fountain Valley third.

Mike Faria of Colton won the eight-lap handicap main by taking the lead on the second lap after starting on the 40-yard line. Brant was second, Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa was third and Oxley was fourth.

The track condition, especially on turns No. 3 and No. 4, was especially poor. Robert Pfetzing of Santa Ana slipped during the first handicap race and Steve Russell ran into his back. Pfetzing would not come out for the handicap main.
